The poor structure of India's educational system has negatively affected many children, including Mahesh. The nearest school is 15 15-kilometer walk from Mahesh's poor, rural village, making it extremely difficult for him to attend regularly. A lack of accountability in the school system allows teachers to not show up to work, leaving students to fend for themselves. Mahesh's parents are illiterate, working unstable jobs as laborers. Despite their low circumstances, his parents desire a better future for their four sons; they understand that education is key to that future.
Through the Mercy Home, Mahesh has the opportunity to change the course of his life. He is able to attend a quality school, growing in his intellectual knowledge and skills. More importantly, Mahesh is also growing in his spiritual relationship with Christ, surrounded by nurturing Christian men and women and participating in daily Bible study. Mahesh hopes that his studies will one day enable him to become a lawyer. In his spare time, he enjoys learning new dances, practicing his reading skills, and playing Carom with his new friends. Mahesh enjoys eating rice, dal, chapatti, and vegetables, but meat is his favorite.
